Belizean cultural icon Gerald “Lord” Rhaburn celebrated his 88th birthday on 3 March 2024 amidst well-wishes pouring in from both within and outside the borders of Belize. Known for his groundbreaking contributions as a cultural ambassador, Lord Rhaburn has left an indelible mark on the music scene, both locally and internationally.
Back in August 6, 1959, when Lord Rhaburn formed the Lord Rhaburn Combo, few could have foreseen the tremendous success that would follow. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the band reigned supreme in Belize, captivating audiences with their diverse repertoire of calypso, soca, reggae, and brukdown music, much of it composed by Rhaburn himself.
The House of Culture notes that Lord Rhaburn achieved what many politicians could not – he won the hearts of audiences in Guatemala City and beyond, serving as a musical pioneer and ambassador for Belize, characterized by his showmanship, impeccable style, and musical prowess.
In recognition of his contributions, the area behind Memorial Park has been dedicated as the Lord Rhaburn Plaza, and he has received numerous honors over the years.
However, amidst the accolades lies a stark reality – the treatment of Lord Rhaburn in his later years leaves much to be desired. Despite promises made by the previous administration, including a monthly stipend of $500 for Lord Rhaburn and two other Belizean icons, the funds have yet to materialize. It is imperative that those in authority honor their commitments and provide the support owed to these cultural pioneers.
