A Guide To Dating In Belize

What’s the dating scene like in Belize?

For singles traveling here or even those in a relationship but looking, Belize offers the chance of truly exotic adventure and variety. The country has a small population and you might have to look a little bit harder for a date and romance to suit your likes, compared to say neighboring Honduras or Guatemala.

Experienced travelers tend to follow the advice of locals and head off to the nightclubs and sports bars that dot most any population center in Belize.

The general rule as in any other country is to first consult the hotel concierge. If this is below your room rate, next down would be the bellhop. If you have no bellhop, consult the bartender. Beyond that is the wildcard of the taxi driver or your tour guide. Dating is easier in the high volume tourism spots such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia and increasingly in southern Belize.

Belizeans are individuals like anyone else, anywhere in the world. Wherever you’d normally go to meet people in your own hometown, you’ll find it equally effective in Belize. From the experience related to us by long-term residents, the majority of expatriates who have formed relationships with locals were introduced through mutual acquaintances.

The beauty of Belize lies in the variety of cultures ranging from Latino, to Lebanese, German, African, English, American, Canadian, Venezuelan, Dutch and a wide variety of other ethnic groups. But the predominant groups you may encounter are Latinas and Afro-Belizeans. Belize has a growing population of immigrants from Central America, mainly Honduras, Guatemala, U.S.A., Canada, and El Salvador and this is accentuated in western and southern Belize.

How To Date Women in Belize

As Belize is an English-speaking country and internet access is excellent, many Belizeans are online. One of the best ways to find prospective dates is on FaceBook and Instagram. There you can freely find ladies looking for dates and mates. Locals love to party and the partying starts on Thursdays. One of the best ways to find a date in Belize is to visit one of the many dance clubs or casinos. If you are a visitor, your tour guide or taxi driver can serve as a wing man and introduce you to prospective dates for a round of drinks, and take it from there. For the visitor good places to meet Belizeans are of course on the many beaches and tourist spots around the country.

Belize City as the largest city in the country, presents numerous opportunities to meet potential dates. Some of the prime locations for socializing and meeting new people include nightclubs, dance clubs, casinos, bars, festivals, party venues, and various events. The hot area in the city is Princess Margaret Drive where you can find various casinos and nightclubs. The nearby BTL Park is a centre of nighttime activity starting on Thursdays and going up to Sunday night. Locals and tourists throng this area looking for nighttime food and relaxation or to take a break from the many casinos and nightclubs. This seaside park and the neighboring Marion Jones Sports Complex often double as venues for Belizean, Caribbean and other international artists performing for concerts. Belize City is grungy to put it mildly so caution in selecting which nightspot to patronize is advisable.

North Side Belize city is safer than the South Side. Visitors looking to party and mix with the locals may consider hiring a cab for the night (preferably registered with their hotel).

Belize Municipal fairs and special events go largely unannounced to the outside world. The wise visitor may want to do research before embarking on a mission of discovery. Here we have a night party in the City of Belmopan, free entrance, multiple bands including this one the Orquesta Raza Que Arrasa from Guatemala, lots of local food and drink available and what a way to meet Belizeans and visitors from across the border. The Cayo District located in western Belize boasts Belize’s second-largest town, San Ignacio and Santa Elena. This area also features some notable clubs, offering a decent nightlife scene. Additionally, opportunities for socializing and entertainment are on the rise in southern Belize. Benque Viejo Del Carmen sitting practically on the border with Guatemala has its share of nightclubs and easy access to the nightlife in neighbouring Melchor de Mencos Guatemala. Be mindful that some of the ladies will be accompanied, so the services of a local taxi driver or fixer may be critical to score and avoid any conflict. The music at these nightclubs is Central American and Caribbean influenced – Cumbia, Bachata, Hip Hop, Dance Club and Latin Music. Most clubs are open until 2 in the morning in Belize City. Out-district nightclubs are open until midnight and on special occasions 3 a.m.

Dating Belizean girls is no different from what you would expect in your own country. This is not a general dating guide, but we provide some tips for you: Urban girls are more independent, liberal and outgoing. In the countryside and villages more traditional dating practices such as bringing a chaperone along are common.

The best advice is to allow enough time to look around, mix a lot and be bold. Belizeans have a reputation for being polite and sometimes shy of visitors. For those experienced in the nightclub scene, every municipality in Belize has one or more nightclubs. Here you will encounter a wide range of party-goers, from bank employees, and public service managers, but also everyday girls seeking to unwind from domestic weekday duties or looking for a new date or boyfriend.

But far more fun and diversity can be found at the many village and municipal fairs held throughout the country. These include mechanical rides, fair attractions and dances. Here the full range of Belizean men and women are at the fore and arguably offer the best opportunity to meet and link up with a potential date. The more popular fairs are the Succotz, Benque Viejo, San Ignacio and the National Agriculture and Trade Show Belmopan in western Belize. The San Joaquin, Orange Walk and Corozal Fairs in the north as very popular as well. Placencia in southern Belize has various festivals and concerts and attracts expats and immigrants from surrounding areas such as Bella Vista, Independence Village and Hopkins.

By far one of the best places to see and meet Belizeans is where there is a party. A BIG party like a country fair or music festival. The National Agriculture and Trade Show in western Belize is held during the Labour Day holiday weekend in May and signals the start of summer; and there are many other festivals throughout the country and across the border. The fiestas at border towns such as Melchor de Mencos and Flores Petén in Guatemala, as well as the annual Expofer in Chetumal, Mexico offer  novel opportunities for fun and meeting people. The best advice is to check social media and the local T.V. stations for event calendars. These are usually featured on commercials before the evening news at 6:30 pm on weekdays. Special promotions, dance club specials and fairs are listed.

If you speak English you are good to go throughout most of Belize. In certain areas such as northern and western Belize and increasingly in the south, locals prefer to communicate in Spanish. If you do not speak Spanish, it is up to you learn some basic Spanish. No need to learn classic Spanish literature. Everyday phrases suffice.  Hola, coma estas (Hi, how are you) is one of the most common opening lines. Hola chica, te invito a una cerveza? (Hi there, can I invite you to a beer or drink?) will rarely get you turned down.

In social settings, especially in rural areas, a mom, aunt or sister may be chaperone of the object of your affection. Do not be intimidated, but be thick-skinned and ready to be shot down and move on to the next prospect. Buenas noches damas. Soy turista. Les acompano a tomar algo conmigo (Good evening ladies. I am a tourist. Can I invite you to drink something with me?) is a winning pick up line at almost any nightclub.

Belizean Nightlife In Central Belize

While Belize City and to a lesser extent San Pedro Ambergris Caye are the main areas for nightlife, central Belize, or the area in Belmopan and its surrounds in the Cayo District are coming into their own as “bashment” territory.

The City of Belmopan has a population of over 20,000, and the immediate surrounding areas of Las Flores, Salvapan, San Martin, Maya Mopan, and nearby villages of Roaring Creek, Cotton Tree, Camalote contribute to a growing area with nightclubs, weekend and holiday nightlife.

Another good way to find people partying is at political events, especially conventions and pre-election bashments sponsored by the local political parties. While these events are pitched at supporters and prospective supporters, no one will be turned away. These events are often informally organised and end with a free dance and often food, with local music bands.

The Cost Of Dating Through Social Media

With the rise of social media – FaceBook, TikTok and Instgram are the more popular in Belize – it is inevitable that dating through social media is now accepted by Belizeans, especially those living in urban areas. A comment in a private Belizean chat group devoted to dating summarizes the reality.

“I’ve been noticing a trend that seems small right now but is growing. More women are turning to selling personal content or offering meet-ups for money. Prices range from around BZ$50. for photos to higher amounts for in-person arrangements. Some may be skeptical, but it’s definitely happening.

“A lot of people might not see it yet, but if this trend keeps growing, it could completely change the dating landscape. Once men start realizing they can pay for what they used to pursue, the dynamics of dating will shift – likely not in women’s favor.

“That should be a concern for women, not because dating will disappear, but because fewer men may feel the need to approach or build relationships in the same way anymore.

“It’s an uncomfortable conversation, but it’s real – and worth thinking about.”
