Attorneys in Belize are no different from any other service provider. Except that lawyers are rarely sued for malpractice. In the words of veteran Belize lawyer Richard “Dickie” Bradley, “Lawyers in Belize do not fight each other. We belong to a lodge.” Unethical lawyers and magistrates, like in any jurisdiction, are not uncommon. Our recommendation is to do due diligence and ask many questions before hiring legal counsel in Belize. This may be the best way to avoid larcenous lawyers.

The General Legal Council
Members of the public, including those not residing in Belize who feel they have been wronged by a Belize attorney have various resources for seeking relief. One option, and the most economical, is to out the attorney in the media.
Another option is to lodge a complaint with the General Legal Council.
The General Legal Council is established under the Legal Profession Act Chapter 320 of the Laws Of Belize. It is chaired by the Attorney General. The Council includes the President Of the Belize Bar Association and four other lawyers selected by the Bar. Decisions taken by the GLC are sent as recommendations to the Chief Justice who then orders redress for the complainant and disciplines the offending lawyer. Punishment ranges from order of restitution with reprimand, suspension and disbarment. From the Act:
“PART III – Discipline. 15.–(1) Any person alleging himself aggrieved by an act of professional misconduct (including any default) committed by an attorney-at-law may make application supported by an affidavit of the facts of which he complains to the Council to require the attorney to answer such allegations; and the Registrar or any member of the Association may make a like application to the Council in respect of such grave professional misconduct.”

In an intriguing 2024 case decided by the General Legal Council in the matter of lawyer Orson Elrington, a preacher impeached the learned counsel who on the one hand compelled government to remove a law that discriminated against widowers, but on the other, improperly retained the award granted to his client: General Legal Council Finds Attorney O.J. Elrington Guilty Of Professional Misconduct. Nothing strikes terror in a lawyers heart like being informed that the GLC is making inquiries into his affairs. This can only be topped by a U.S. Grand Jury or the DEA becoming interested in a lawyer’s work. Date set for attorney Andrew Bennett’s extradition case.
