The new Miss Universe Belize 2020 – 2021 is 24 year old Iris Salguero from San Pedro. The announcement was made at a Miss Belize Universe Press Conference Reveal held today at the Best Western Hotel in Belize city.
Iris Salguero grew up in San Pedro Ambergris Caye in Belize. As one of twelve siblings, Iris learned the importance of being patient and how to be a team player at a very young age. In High School, she had to finance her own education and was proud to graduate as Salutatorian. Salguero plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree in digital marketing and will eventually open a trade school in her community called “Brighter Future”. In the meantime, Iris is working as a brand ambassador and model for local businesses owned by female entrepreneurs. Her mission is to empower the young women in Belize to overcome hardship and accomplish their dreams. For two years, she was part of S.H.I.N.E, an organization dedicated to building healthy self-esteem for girls ages 12-18. As a survivor of an abusive relationship, she is fighting to end violence against women and to be a voice for those who suffer in silence. This “Island girl” is passionate about the environment and has participated in several clean up campaigns to spread awareness on the importance of protecting the natural resources in her country. She has proudly represented Belize at three different international pageants and cannot wait to grace the Miss Universe stage.
In a message on her social media pages today, the new Miss Belize Universe 2020 – 2021 said “Thank you to everyone for the overwhelming love and support that is being shown to me. I hope I made my home town proud by being the first San Pedrana to win The Miss Universe Belize Crown.
“And to all my Belizeans, your support means the world to me and makes the difference. This journey isn’t possible without you and know I can count on all of you to help me carry Belize in my heart wherever I go. I am committed to each and everyone of you. I will make you proud. Its an honor to showcase our jewel to the universe! Our presence will be felt and our country’s name will be heard.”
The Miss Universe Pageant 2021 was was held on 16 May 2021 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida, U.S.A. after an introduction piece the twenty-one advancing women were named, including the top fan vote. Unfortunately, Miss Universe Belize Iris Salguero did not make the cut, but she still made the country proud. The sixty-ninth Miss Universe is Mexico’s Andrea Meza. The twenty-six-year-old succeeds South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi, whose reign was extended due to the coronavirus pandemic and goes down in history as the longest reigning titleholder. Mexico, which is considered a powerhouse in the pageant industry, has had sixty-three placements and six victories; prior to Sunday night’s win of the 2020 Miss Universe crown, Mexico had captured the crown in 2010 when Jimena Navarrete won the coveted title and then in 2019, its delegate was the second runner up. In amateur footage following the crowning, Meza said she is ready for this new journey. Meza was one of seventy-four delegates, including Belize’s very own Iris Salguero, who competed for the crown. Significantly, Salguero was among several delegates who were featured for their stories of being survivors of gender-based violence.
